Phantoms finish season with hard fought win over West

In what has become the traditional last game of the season the Phantoms took on West at Camden. Conditions were good with a slight wind favouring the southern goals. The toss went the Phantoms way and we elected to kick with the aid of the breeze. The opening was a tough seesawing affair with the phantoms getting the upper hand scoring five goals to two. We missed a few opportunities but at quarter time held a handy lead. Viv started in the goal square and kicked truly for 2 goals whilst Frank was marking strongly playing further up the field kicked one. Spoggy playing at half forward nailed 1 on the run from the pocket.

With the two teams evenly matched West took advantage of the breeze to land a few telling blows kicking 5 goals and snatching the lead at one point. Yorri contested the centre ball ups strongly usually managing to get first touch but West were reading the taps well and getting the centre breaks. The boys in the backline were put under pressure but slowly were getting on top and started to launch counterattacks. Phantoms countered with 3 goals of their own, Frank with another 2 and Spoggy snapping truly for his second.

West kept the pressure on and jumped the Phantoms to hit the lead once more with 3 goals before the Phantoms steadied with a couple more goals. Hards was workman like around the packs getting in and under to move the ball forward. In the back line Steve, Conan, Rob A with Lindsay dropping in were taking control. A rare goal to Dougy and a typical Greeny goal in his characteristic hooking style left the Phantoms with lead going into the last quarter.

In front of a jovial(pissed) crowd the Phantoms held their nerve and finished the game well outscoring West 3 goals to 2 into the now failing breeze. Leo getting involved snaring 2 last quarter goals. Victory to the Phantoms finishing the season well with 2 wins on the trot. As a contest it was hard fought and one of the best games, as a spectacle, of the season.

Thanks goes to all palyers for coming out not just for this game but throughout the year. After 10 years the Phantoms are evolving. It is likely that we will see many chances within the club over the next few years. It is time for everyone to get involved.
